Beginning this fall, our department will change the scheduling of its seminars.  Seminars will no longer be weekly.  There will be two seminars per month, and although efforts will be made to schedule these seminars two weeks apart, it cannot always be done that way.

This means you will have to check the seminar webpage regularly.  I will send out email reminders.  You really, really need to read your emails every day and to read mine, as you might miss out on something that could effect your grade.

Our first seminar will be on 7 September.  Dr. Kathleen Berecek, who had to reschedule her seminar from this summer due to a university-imposed scheduling conflict, will be our first speaker.

JOURNAL CLUB

Journal Club will be very different this year.  Journal Club meets every Monday, 4pm, MCLM 901.  That’s still the same.

On the Monday before we have a seminar speaker scheduled, whoever is presenting at JC that week will choose a paper authored by that speaker, based on the speaker’s presentation title.  If the speaker submits a paper, the presenter will use that paper as the basis for his/her presentation.

The Mondays when there is no seminar scheduled that week:  Journal Club will meet, as usual.  The difference will be that the presenter will use a paper of her/his choosing (after consultation with Dr. Lori McMahon) as the basis for the presentation to the group.  The presenter will make that paper available in electronic form to me to pass on to the other students.

I have the sign up list available now.  First-year students will choose a date in May to present.

Contact me to sign up.  Spots are given on a first-come, first-served basis.  Two slots will have to have 2 presenters in order for all students to have a chance.

Absences:  Students are allowed only 3 absences over Fall and Spring Semesters.  This means a student can be excused for being absent from either a seminar or a journal club 3 times (i.e., you can miss 2 seminars and 1 journal club or 3 seminars or 3 journal clubs, etc.).  You do not get to have 3 absences from seminars and 3 absences from journal club.  If you have questions on this, please contact me.

More than 3 excused absences will show up in your grade in the Spring Semester.

LUNCHES

Each student will have to sign up for 6 lunches from September thru May.  If you sign up for a luncheon, and no speaker is ever scheduled for that day, you still will receive credit for attendance.

Luncheon attendance is mandatory – no absences or excuses.

If you are signed up for a lunch and you find out you cannot be there, you MUST get another of our CMPh graduate students to attend for you.  You MUST notify me of the change and who will take your place so that I can make sure she/he has a lunch to eat.

I have sign-up sheet available.  First come, first served.
