RESEARCH INTEREST

Stearate is an 18-carbon saturated fatty acid found in chocolate, red meat and partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.  Our laboratory demonstrated that stearate causes breast cancer cells to become anti-apoptotic, anti-proliferative, anti-migratory, and to de-adhere from the extracellular matrix.  Annexin II is a calcium dependent membrane binding protein that plays a role in cell proliferation, signaling pathways, extracellular matrix, regulation of proteolysis, and cholesterol transport.  Stearate causes a dramatic translocation of annexin II to lipid rafts in breast cancer cells.  The role of my project is to determine and characterize the functional effects of this translocation.

About Lynda:

I graduated in 2003 with a B.A. in Biology from Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY.  In my spare time I like to read, play softball, hang out with my friends, take random trips around the South, visit my family, and volunteer with various groups at my church.
